TALES
OF THE CITY – THE MUSICAL
It
began as a gleam in the eye of Jeff Whitty, the Tony Award-winning book
writer for “Avenue Q.” Jeff had been looking for
his next project, and Tales
of the City struck him as ideal
for adaptation to the musical stage. Armistead, as it happened, had
been trying for years to get “Tales” off the ground
as a musical and had greatly admired Jeff’s work in
“Avenue Q,” so the decision was an easy one.
To
write the music and lyrics Jeff brought on board his friends Jason
Sellards (AKA Jake Shears) and John Garden (JJ) of the disco and glam
rock-inspired pop group Scissor Sisters. “Tales of the
City” will be directed by Jason Moore (“Avenue
Q” and “Shrek”).
In
2009 “Tales of the City” was one of two musicals
chosen (from a field of 152) to participate in the summer workshop of
the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut.
"Tales
of the City" had its
world premiere at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco in
June, 2011.
